“Serving the diplomatic corps and China’s diplomatic cause” is the BDS-HSC’s mission and along with the elevation of China’s international status and the development of foreign relations, increasingly more embassy compounds built in the 1960s-70s in Beijing are requiring renovation to catch up with the growing demand for office space.
Due to severe space shortage, the Belgian Embassy chancery compound, built in January 1973, is in need of reconstruction. The Embassy and the HSC have had 23 rounds of discussions in the past 6 years since 2011 and the final agreement on issues of rent-free period, rent and temporary chancery compound for use in the transitional period was reached and signed at the Ambassador’s Residence on 28 October 2016 under the guidance of the BDS-HSC leadership. Witnessed by Jiang Qi, Executive Deputy Director General of the BDS, Mr. Zhang Yue, General Manager of the HSC, and Mr. Michel Malherbe, Belgian Ambassador to China, signed the reconstruction agreement and related project management service agreements.
The Ambassador attributed the successful signing of the deal to the longtime and solid foundation of friendly cooperation between the two sides. Ms. Jiang and Mr. Zhang were invited to take part in the reception marking the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, at which the deal was announced by the visiting Belgian Prime Minister, Mr. Charles Michel, as one of the important achievements celebrating the occasion. Ms. Jiang, Mr. Zhang and the Prime Minister listened to the new chancery compound design concept introduced by the relevant Belgian architect and exchanged views on the next-stage construction work.
The agreement contains a new mode of
cooperation between the HSC and the diplomatic missions and an innovative way
of renovating the chancery compound. All efforts will be made to build the new
chancery compound into a flagship project and role model of practical
cooperation between the two countries in the future.
