On February 11, 2026 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met the press together with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in Budapest.
Wang Yi stated that China and Hungary enjoy a traditional friendship. Over the past 70-plus years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two sides have always adhered to mutual respect, equality, and win-win cooperation, setting a stellar example of a new type of international relations, and becoming all-weather comprehensive strategic partners for the new era. This visit to Hungary is aimed at deepening friendship and expanding cooperation. The two foreign ministers have reached broad consensus during their talks, and are fully confident about the development of China-Hungary relations. Looking to the future, the two sides should continue to make joint efforts in five aspects:
First, jointly consolidate the foundation of mutual trust. High-level political mutual trust is the guarantee for the steady and sustained development of China-Hungary relations. Guided by the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries, the two sides will strengthen strategic communication, deepen strategic mutual trust, and support each other in safeguarding core interests and major concerns. China highly appreciates Hungary's firm commitment to the one-China principle, and will, as always, support Hungary in safeguarding its national sovereignty, security, and development interests, and in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions.
Second, jointly deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. High-quality practical cooperation is the driving force for the robust growth of China-Hungary relations. The two sides will continue to strengthen the strategic synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and Hungary's "Opening to the East" policy, and push for the early operation of flagship projects such as the Budapest-Belgrade Railway. Thanks to the China-Hungary friendship, Hungary has become one of the most important investment destinations for Chinese enterprises in Europe. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the Hungarian side will create a more favorable business environment and provide more policy support for Chinese enterprises to invest and do business. China will remain committed to high-standard opening up, sharing opportunities and seeking common development with countries around the world. Hungary is welcome to board the fast train of Chinese modernization to expand cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, digital economy, new energy, green development and environmental protection, and high-end equipment, so as to continuously upgrade China-Hungary cooperation.
Third, jointly enhance people-to-people bonds. People-to-people bonds are an endless source of strength for China-Hungary relations. The recently unveiled seventh Confucius Institute in Hungary has built another bridge of friendship between the two peoples. China has implemented a unilateral visa-free policy for Hungarian citizens, and welcomes more Hungarian friends to enjoy a spontaneous trip to China and experience firsthand the unique charm and development vitality of contemporary China.
Fourth, jointly work for the sound development of China-EU relations. The success story of China-Hungary relations demonstrates that differences in culture and systems are not obstacles to dialogue and cooperation, and that mutual respect is the right way for countries to get along with each other. China presents opportunities rather than risks, and is a partner rather than a rival for Europe. China welcomes Hungary's commitment to a correct perception of China and its consistent role as a steadfast supporter of China-EU cooperation, which fully serves the interests of the people of Hungary and other EU countries.
Fifth, jointly promote the improvement of global governance. The world today is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, and the international situation has become more volatile and turbulent. However, division, confrontation, and zero-sum games lead nowhere, and making the world return to the law of the jungle runs against the will of the people. Practicing true multilateralism and building a community with a shared future for humanity is the right choice. The Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping responds to the shared aspirations of the international community for peace, cooperation, and development. China is ready to work with Hungary and all like-minded countries to follow the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and jointly build a more just and equitable global governance system.
