The Beijing International Club, formerly known as the "Western Gentry Club" (also known as the “Peking Billiard Room”), was set up at the end of the Qing Dynasty in 1878 in the city center, specifically in Beijing’s area of the legations, and was a place of leisure, entertainment, social gatherings intended for people living in the neighborhood’s foreign embassies. Burned in 1909, it was rebuilt in 1911 under the auspices of relevant embassies and other institutions and by the German architect Curt Rothkegel in the locality close to the former address of the club, No. 8, Taijichang. It was then renamed "Peking Club".
In 1950, the Peking Club was placed under the direction of the newly created Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and renamed “International Club”. In 1972, under the auspices of Premier Zhou Enlai, the new Beijing International Club was built in Jianguomenwai (current address), and was seen as one of the three luxury buildings on Chang'an Avenue along with Beijing Hotel and Beijing Friendship Store. In the 1970s, it was an important place where Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Soong Ching Ling and other famous national leaders hosted social events and celebrations. Its restaurant and entertainment venues were also places frequented by foreign diplomats, and were known as the "second home" of foreign friends in China. On December 19, 2007, the Beijing Municipal Planning Commission published the 'First List of Outstanding Protected Contemporary and Modern Architecture in Beijing" containing 188 buildings in 71 localities classified as protected objects. The Beijing International Club, built in 1972, was one of them.
In more than 40 years since its establishment, the Beijing International Club has experienced continuous development and built hotels, office buildings, leisure centers, apartments and other facilities, with which it provides integrated services of offices, housing, conference venues, gyms, and fitness and caterings to foreign diplomats, enjoying a high reputation in China and abroad, and gradually forming a service model described in a saying "In the West there is Diaoyutai and in the East there is the Club".
The Beijing International Club, with its long history, its cultural connotation of understated elegance and an excellent service of exceptional quality, has become the first choice of Chinese and foreign diplomats and international friends for their business and leisure activities.
