About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

 

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

 

About the position

The Visual Communications Officer position is a locally engaged position.  The Visual Communications Officer manages the Embassy’s website and new media operations and development to project a positive, accurate and contemporary image of Australia to the Chinese public, in line with the priority placed on online and social media outreach in the DFAT Public Diplomacy Strategy.  The Visual Communications Officer also provides support for major section initiatives and projects, including event management and media management responsibilities.

 

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

 

Graphic Design

·Lead the development of program visual identity graphic material under the direction of the Communications and Public Diplomacy team for all Embassy media platforms

·Liaison and negotiation with external Graphic Designers for development and implementation of media collateral for events

 

Media Collateral Management

·Management of all event photography and videography into a comprehensive archive

·Handle enquiries for photo and video material across all China posts

·Design and production of visual style of media releases, reports or other documentation where required

 

Photography and Videography

·Manage and liaise with external photographers and videographers and assist with photography and videography of events

·Ability to photograph events when required

·Editing of videography for website and social media platforms

·Assist with subtitling video content or manage outsourcing of subtitling

 

Website Management

·Assist with Embassy website management and preparation of graphic material for the website

·Assist with website troubleshooting

·Contribute to continuous improvements to the design, layout and creative content of the Embassy’s online resources and platforms

·Assist with monitoring and researching relevant social media and internet developments, and identify new social media and internet-based tools that may assist achieving public diplomacy objectives

 

Qualifications/Experience

 

·Tertiary qualifications, desirably in visual communication or graphic design

·At least 1 year’s experience in graphic design and developing visual identity

·At least 1 year’s relevant experience in management of websites and internet-based platforms, ability to manage all aspects of website management including uploading and monitoring of content, demonstrated creativity in web design/layout, coordination of linked-in social networking tools.

·Essential: Experience with InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and video editing software

·Essential: Strong technical knowledge of HTML and CSS and experience with Content Management Systems.  

·Ability to produce high quality photo and video material quickly during and following events for immediate release

·Fluent oral and verbal English and Mandarin language skills. 

 

Selection Criteria

 

Applicants should address all four of the selection criteria below, clearly outlining their claims and specific experience and examples that makes them suitable for this position (maximum 500 words each criteria). 

 

1.Demonstrate initiative, innovation and ability to develop marketing promotional material with visual portfolio of examples of graphic material produced.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate initiative and innovation in the development of such materials.  Two examples of work are required.

 

2.Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English and Mandarin, to a broad and diverse range of stakeholders and other interested parties.

 

3.Demonstrated organisational skills and ability to prioritise workloads.  Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.

 

4.Ability to work effectively and cohesively in a team and demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills in order to collaborate and coordinate with team members and produce the team’s and organisation’s desired effect and outcome.
