Starting Salary: 284,506 RMB, negotiable depending on experience.

 

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

 

The Public Affairs Adviser (Media & Stakeholder Relations and Event Management) works within the Public Affairs Team to provide specialist communications expertise and event management support to assist the work of the Embassy in Beijing and the broader network of New Zealand Consulates-General in China.

 

The Public Affairs Adviser’s role is to promote and raise the awareness of New Zealand in the Chinese media and general public through media engagement and the organisation of cultural activities, events associated with senior visits and other key Embassy activities and cross-Government initiatives. The Adviser will be responsible for ensuring a strategic approach to planning and delivery of effective communication with audiences and key stakeholders across relevant channels; and provide specialist advice to the wider Ministry on media engagement and communication strategies, relevant to China.

 

Mā‎ wai te mahi nei? – Who are we looking for?

 

• In this role you will:  

o Build, maintain and extend strong networks of contacts with Chinese and international media institutions and journalists.

o Support the achievement of New Zealand’s strategic priorities through targeted engagement with Chinese media and audiences across a variety of channels, including providing advice on and coordinating media interviews and media opportunities for the Ambassador and for official visitors.

o Build and maintain networks with key stakeholders including alumni networks, sports, arts, cultural and community organisations in support of the Embassy’s public affairs objectives.

o Lead the planning and on-site delivery of the Embassy’s public affairs events and other activities in Beijing. This may include cultural activities (film screenings, cultural exhibitions, literary events), events associated with official visits and other key Embassy activities and cross-Government initiatives (such as alumni events).

o Coordinate the delivery of high quality and high impact events, including organisation of guest lists, protocol requirements, photographers, venue set up and catering etc

o Evaluate public diplomacy impact and prepare post-event reports, including on expenditure and outcomes.

o Support the design and implementation of a targeted public diplomacy strategy to enhance New Zealand’s profile in China, aligned with the embassy’s strategy and objectives.

o Provide specialist advice on communications opportunities and risks to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade managers and staff in China and New Zealand

 

You will need:

o A relevant tertiary qualification, preferably communications-based

o Demonstrated experience in one of the following: communications, public relations, event management or journalism

o Demonstrated expertise in communications service delivery with an excellent knowledge of communications practice

o Demonstrated knowledge of Chinese media environment and experience in dealing with Chinese media organisations and individuals

o Professional fluency in both Chinese and English, both written and verbal

o Demonstrated experience in project or event management, including working within a budget and problem solving

o Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders

o Ability to work as part of a small team, with flexibility, initiative and minimal supervision, applying sound judgement and innovation to public diplomacy and communications tasks as needed

o Strong organisational skills, ability to work well under pressure, prioritise and meet deadlines, offer solutions and take on multiple tasks in a team environment

o Knowledge of Chinese arts and cultural scene is desirable
