Chef (residence) — Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beijing

The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Beijing is seeking an experienced, creative chef to plan and deliver high-quality cuisine for official events at the Ambassador’s residence. The Embassy hosts everything from breakfasts, luncheons and dinners to medium and large-scale receptions for several hundred guests. As a seafood nation, the embassy also showcases Norwegian seafood, food culture and culinary traditions at our events for Chinese and international guests.
As part of our mission to highlight Norwegian seafood, culinary traditions, and local products, we are looking for a creative and dedicated chef to help us present Norwegian cuisine at its finest.
Responsibilities
· Develop menus (breakfasts, luncheons, dinners, buffets, canapés) with a strong emphasis on Norwegian seafood and Nordic flavors.
· Cook for small and medium events in the Residence kitchen
· Lead kitchen logistics and prepare catering for large receptions (hundreds of guests), including vendor coordination and staffing plans
· Source ingredients, prepare costs and budgets for events and manage inventories.
· Maintain and expand relationships with reliable suppliers of Norwegian seafood and other Norwegian products.
· Stay current with Norwegian and Nordic food trends
· Maintain a clean, well-organized kitchen and ensure inventories and facilities are in accordance with high food safety and hygiene standards.
Qualifications
· Culinary education or substantial, relevant professional experience (experience may substitute for formal education).
· Proven track record in high-volume event catering, hotels, embassies, or fine-dining establishments.
· Seafood knowledge and preferably knowledge about Norwegian seafood and cuisine.
· Experience with large-scale kitchen catering and logistics (prep planning, batch production, cold chain, plating lines).
· Vendor network in Beijing (or ability to build one quickly) is an advantage.
· Language: Proficiency in English required.
· Familiarity with food safety systems (HACCP or equivalent).
Personal qualities
· Excellent organizer who performs well under pressure and deadlines.
· Creative, quality-driven and detail-oriented
· Flexible self-starter who can also lead a team and coordinate tasks on busy event days.
· Structured, independent and efficient,
· Clear communicator across cultures and functions (residence staff, vendors etc.).
Salary:
To be fixed, dependent on experience and qualifications.
Work permit:
All applicants must have a legal basis to live and work in China, either as Chinese citizen or independent visa/work permit in case of non-Chinese applicants. The Norwegian Embassy does not sponsor applications for visa/work permits.
