About the Australian Government’s Department of Industry, Innovation and Science

The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS) enables growth and productivity for globally competitive Australian industries. DIIS seeks to grow business investment in Australia (including in resources and energy commodities), supports science and commercialisation, and aims to improve Australian business capability.

 

About the position

The position is one of two locally-engaged LE5 positions in the DIIS team. These positions work closely together and are responsible for supporting DIIS and driving engagement between Australia and China. This position has a focus on resources and energy commodities.

 

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

 

·         Identify and implement innovations to improve effectiveness and efficiency of processes and activities in support of the work of the Industry, Innovation and Science portfolio in China

·         Develop and implement project plans to support the Counsellors, suggesting projects to link current activities with future opportunities

·         Coordinate, liaise and work cooperatively with other agencies at the Embassy and DIIS in Canberra, to achieve outcomes

·         Monitor, analyse and prepare high quality targeted reporting on developments of China’s major policies relevant to DIIS responsibilities and make recommendations on specialist and complex topics

·         Provide briefing and speeches on specialist areas

·         Provide high quality support to the Counsellors to promote two-way trade and investment in resources and energy commodities sectors as well as Australian capabilities in relevant sectors and mechanisms to support greater collaboration

·         Develop and maintain productive working relationships with national and local government and other contacts

·         Represent DIIS and the Embassy in meetings, conferences and events

·         Manage delegation visits and meetings, including program design and logistics arrangements

·         Provide professional summary translations of policy documents, analytical reports, Ministerial and other correspondence

·         Provide interpretation for the Counsellors to a high standard

·         Support the Counsellors in managing the forward calendar, section budget, external project contracts for service and other section management tasks.

 

Qualifications/Experience

 

·         Demonstrated ability to work as part of a unit or small team

·         Tertiary qualifications in one or more related fields

·         Ability to communicate effectively (orally and written) in both English and Mandarin is essential. This includes strong interpreting and translation skills

·         Demonstrated understanding or previous experience in one or more of the resources, energy, science and innovation sectors

·         Demonstrated ability to drive and conduct high-level research, analysis and reporting

·         Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate collaborative work across teams, marshalling resources to produce high-quality outcomes in a busy and varied environment

·         Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships with stakeholders and manage projects involving other Embassy work units

·         Ability to prioritise a busy workload, work under pressure to meet deadlines with great attention to detail. Adaptability and initiative, and an ability to work independently and as part of a team

·         Competence using Microsoft software, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, databases and internet-based research

·         Good understanding of China’s political and economic environment, and strong knowledge of China’s resources, energy and environmental policies - and Australia’s interests in the region - is highly desirable

·         Relevant work experience in the resources or energy sectors desirable.
